What We Believe

What We Believe

We believe in God, the Father, who created us, and gives us life and purpose. We believe in Jesus, the Son, who redeems us, gives us mercy and offers us forgiveness for our sins through his death and resurrection. We believe in the Holy Spirit, who empowers us and offers us daily guidance and grace.

We believe the mission of First on Broad is to live out our faith, as an expression of love, by helping people thrive in God’s abundant life.
We work to do this in four ways:

  • Worship: We work to give people a meaningful and engaging experience every time we gather for worship. In addition to personal or small group study, corporate worship offers a powerful connection to God and others through the sermon, scriptures, and music.

  • Service: Serving God by helping others is an important part of our faith. We work to give people opportunities to use their gifts and talents to serve in ways that strengthen their faith and benefit others.

  • Education: Spiritual knowledge and practical information are important in helping people have the life God intends for them. Thriving in God’s abundant life requires us to understand our faith so we are continuously growing in spiritual knowledge. It also requires us to have the skills we need to be our best selves. At First on Broad we provide multiple opportunities for Bible Study and discussion. We are also developing a curriculum for practical education in life skills like money management, healthy parenting, nailing that job interview, or strengthening your relationships.

  • Nurturing Relationships: Nurturing relationships are vital to a healthy church community. We seek to love, nurture, encourage, and build healthy relationships with others as we worship, serve, learn and grow together.

We believe in the importance of missions, both at home and around the globe.  We take care of our church family, our friends, our neighbors, strangers, and people around the world. We believe in helping the poor, being a voice for the voiceless, and an advocate for those who feel ‘lesser-than.’ Our objective is to draw others to Christ by demonstrating God’s love to the world around us in tangible and meaningful ways.

We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God. We actively encourage each other to read, study, and be led by the scriptures under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We encourage learning about the Bible and God in a variety of settings that serve to provide a time and place for conversation, questions, contemplation and enrichment.

We encourage each other to give and serve as we have been gifted by God. We give our finances to support what God is doing through the church. We give our time and talents to fulfill our mission and to serve God’s purpose.

We believe in the power of prayer. We actively engage in prayer because we believe God listens and responds to us.  We spend time in prayer for ourselves and for others. We ask for guidance in times of uncertainty; we seek clarity in times of confusion; we seek comfort in pain, and we express our gratitude for God’s mercy, grace, favor and love.

We affirm and hold dear the historical Baptist beliefs of autonomy of the local church, a commitment to religious freedom, the priesthood of the believer, and the sacraments of the Lord’s Supper and Believer’s Baptism.

We affirm God’s calling to Christian service and believe in the ordination of both men and women who have been called to serve as deacons, chaplains, preachers, missionaries and ministers.

We believe the Church is a place where we thrive in the abundant life God wants for each of us—a life filled with hope, creativity, encouragement, kindness, understanding, forgiveness, education, mercy, grace, worship, community, service, redemption, and love.
